Surely He scorns the scornful, but gives grace to the humble. Proverbs 3:34 God’s Grace is His power in us to help us do the things He has called us to do, but we just can’t do it on our own without His help. God’s Grace is something we all need more of in our lives. I began to search through scripture to see how we can make sure that God’s grace flows through us so that God is present to help us. My search led me to two passages in the New Testament that quote Proverbs 3:34. Both James (James 4:6) and Peter (1 Peter 5:5) quote this Proverb when talking about the work of God in our lives. It would appear that the way to ensure God’s grace is active in our lives is Humility. This was not the answer I was hoping to find. Humility is not always our focus or the goals we strive for. But this is what the scripture encourages to do. Peter says to “submit yourselves to your elders”, James tells us to “submit yourselves to God”. Jesus as our highest example, according to Philippians 2:8, “humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” Humility is displayed by our obedience/submission to God. Humility starts when we choose God’s way over our way. Here are a few ways to help you begin to make humility a priority: Start today. When pride whispers, “You deserve better,” obey the whisper of James 4:10: “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” Silence the argument with Scripture—open Matthew 6:14–15 and forgive the one who wounded you. Feel the sting? That’s ego dying. That’s humility rising. Serve without a spotlight. Philippians 2:3–4 commands, “In humility value others above yourselves.” Carry groceries for your neighbor. Listen without interrupting. Every “yes” to God’s Word chips away self-importance and carves space for His glory. Pray like Jesus in Gethsemane (Hebrews 5:7): tears, loud cries, reverent submission. Lay your plans on the altar. Text encouragement to a friend, give generously, speak truth kindly. Each act is a brick in the fortress of a gentle, quiet spirit (1 Peter 3:4). Obedience isn’t chains; it’s wings. The lower you bow, the higher He lifts. Trade your crown of pride for His crown of exaltation. Start now—one obedient step, one humble heart—and watch the God who stooped to serve raise you to reign.
