“Behold, I go forward but He is not there, And backward, but I cannot perceive Him; When He acts on the left, I cannot behold Him; He turns on the right, I cannot see Him. But He knows the way I take; When He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold.”
Job 23:8-10
In both the Tabernacle and the Temple in Jerusalem, there was a place dedicated solely to God’s presence. Between this place, called the Holy of Holies, and the rest of the world, there hung a massive veil. Only the High Priest was allowed inside and only on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
Many times in our lives, we feel as though we are cut off or separated from God’s presence, as though a great veil hangs between our hearts and heaven. To paraphrase Job, we can know that God is there and at work in our most painful, confusing, and disturbing times, but feel utterly blind as to what He is doing.
In these moments, we can take comfort knowing that Jesus, as our High Priest, tore the veil separating us from God and is constantly interceding for us. Keep praising! Keep praying! Keep studying! God has ordained an end to the fire through which you are walking and provided everything you need to accomplish His plan! Even when you feel utterly cut off, you are already beyond the veil, and if you remain faithful, you will “come forth as gold”!
